Christians and Piercing

Tattoos and piercing is now approved for Christians and divinely sanctioned, or so says one Warsaw business owner.

Do you have a tattoo? Got piercings? By whose hand were these done? Maybe I should consider making an appointment for a permanent souvenir of Poland. . . ;)

In Scripture, piercing of the ears was a symbol of perpetual servitude. Exodus 21:5-6 states that "...if the servant declares, `I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,' then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life."

Psalm 40:6 speaks of becoming God's willing bond-slave: "Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require."

Job speaks of piercing as a means to subdue the behemoth and leviathan: "Can anyone capture him by the eyes, or trap him and pierce his nose?" (40:24). "Can you put a cord through his nose or pierce his jaw with a hook?" (41:2).

According to Genesis 24:22, Abraham's servant presented Rachael with "a gold nose ring" as well as gold bracelets, in anticipation of engagement to Isaac.

As for tatoos, one of the forgotten requirements of the OT is this one: "Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD." -- Leviticus 19:28 (NIV).
